Wales claim Champions Cup!
Wales were smiling sweetly after.
Sweet, sweet revenge.
That is the tune being sung by newly crowned Barbados Football Association (BFA) Champions Cup winners Weymouth Wales.
Last Sunday evening at the BFA Wildey Turf, Wales came from behind to defeat 2018-19 BFA Premier League champions the Barbados Defense Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) 2-1.
After two seasons of dominance in the Premier League, Wales were dethroned by the BDFSP a fortnight ago, with many hinting that the Carrington Village unit’s supremacy was coming to an end.
Wales dominated possession early in the match and could have taken the lead within ten minutes but Antone Greaves, Romario Harewood and Walton Burrowes missed golden opportunities to open the scoring.
The BDFSP made Wales pay for their misses, with their first meaningful attack.
Captain Raheim Sargeant raced into the Wales penalty area and with two spectating defenders around him, used the outside of his right boot to curl the ball into the bottom right hand corner in the 20th minute.
BDFSP appeared contented with their one goal lead and adopted a passive approach which Wales took advantage of and created a number of opportunities in the latter stages of the match.
Substitute Arantees Lawrence dribbled down the left flank and played a teasing ball to the far post which found Harewood unmarked to convert in the 84th minute.
Lawrence took the title of “super-sub” when he handed Wales the lead and the game winning goal, four minutes into extra time.
Greaves displayed his strength and trickery on the right, then crossed the ball for Lawrence to flick into the goal from close range and earn the Champions Cup for the Weymouth Wales.
