Watch: Mr Killa emotional after winning International Soca Monarch
Mr Killa shed tears of joy when he was announced the new International Soca Monarch.
His dream had finally come true.
Surrounded by friends, supporters from Grenada who came to Trinidad for the show and his mother who he hugged following the announcement of his win, Killa let the tears flow.
Mr Killa, real name Hollis Mapp, entered the finals as the favourite to win the title with his song 'Run With It'. He wasn’t taking any chances however, staging an elaborate presentation with impressive props to leave no doubt in the judges’ minds that he should be the winner.
His presentation started with extras dressed as Roman soldiers declaring war. He emerged sleeping in a throne and when awakened to the news of war, he declared that there will be no war, just fete, before launching into his song.
With Grenadians seeming to outnumber everyone else to the front of the stage, the response was pure mayhem. Coolers, drinks, people and inflatable dolphins were all picked up and run with.
A coffin mysteriously appeared with the carriers declaring that it bore the body of Iwer George. George, Killa’s closest rival, placed second with ‘Water Blessings’.
A boat also appeared to transport Mr Killa from the stage to the crowd.
Long after he departed the stage, his countrymen kept chanting his name.
Speaking to the media after his win, Mr Killa promised to fly the flag high for soca for T&T and Grenada.
