WATCH: Xhosa Barbados brings PURE vibes for Crop Over 2017
One of the most anticipated band launches of the season came off on Sunday evening at St. Ann's Fort.
The Cooler Fete and Launch Party attracted hundreds of patrons who came out from 4:00 pm to have a good time and have the first look at the band's costumes for Kadooment 2017 under the theme "Pure".
Now in its third year, Xhosa Barbados has 10 sections this year, each sponsored by various local and regional entertainment brands such as Glitz Entertainment, Roast Entertainment Punchy Punch, Scorch Bim, Island Fusion and more.
Designers included Rawle Permanand, Tanya Duncan, Humzee, Simone Michelle, Carla ‘ByCarlori’ Gittens, Marie Collette, Christian Boucaud, Marlon Smart and Zenbodia La Borde. They are joined by Alyssa Goddard and Caleb Straker, inaugural winners of Xhosa’s novel designer competition, which put design hopefuls through their paces à la Project Runway in the lead-up to the band’s reveal.
Loop caught up with Jeremy Nicholls Owner and Band Leader of Xhosa Barbados, who was ecstatic after a great production and band launch.
"I'm really excited! It's usually a very long, tiring road but I think we showcased a product people will be happy with and I'm really looking forward to Crop Over from here now."
Stressing Xhosa’s emphasis on bringing a real party atmosphere, Nicholls added, "We're a premium inclusive band so we serve everything - from breakfast, lunch, dinner, premium drinks on the road and we have very, very good sponsors on board with us. We have the experience and the vibes! Xhosa is all about vibes – we don't pose we party!"
Patron feedback was mainly positive, with one person telling Loop it would be a struggle to decide on a section, since “they’re all pretty good”.
One first-timer to the Xhosa Barbados band launch added, "The atmosphere here is amazing, the costumes were amazing and the models were fearless on stage. Xhosa is without a doubt my band for 2017."
DJs Kareem, Jus Jay, Sheldon Paap and Level Vibes, Infamous and Lil Paul, Scott Le Roc and Mali Fresh, Private Ryan and Patrick "The Hypeman" from Euphoric kept the crowd revved up before, during and after the costume presentation.
