Year in Review: 5 Most read stories in Barbados News

Tragedy stuck in many ways in 2019 and resulted in the deaths of more than 50 persons.

With the murder rate rising beyond 45 despite an annual average between 20 and 30 throughout the decade, 2019 was "bloody". In addition to murders, there were road fatalities and quite a few drownings.

Loop extends deepest condolences to all who said good-bye to loved ones during 2019, especially those whose family members or friends were taken violently or unexpectedly.

Below are the most read stories under Loop's Barbados News section in 2019:

1. Update: Mother, son murdered at home in Rices shooting

The Mayers family was dealt a harsh blow losing two of their own in a double homicide. This fatal shooting brought the parish to a pause as vigils and candlelight services were hosted to remember the fallen and urge the parish to return its previously peaceful ways.

2. Holiday tragedy: Man dies on flight from England to Barbados

Dealing with death is always painful, but especially so around the Christmas holiday. Like the team at Virgin Atlantic, we extended condolences to the family of this passenger.

3. Barbados records 34th homicide for 2019

As most Barbadians got ready for bed, or were already fast asleep, family members were being called on to identify the body of a 54-year-old male family member who had been shot. Barbados recorded in excess of 45 murders for 2019. This figure surpasses previous years and stands as a new record high, however there are some discrepancies over the final figure being 47, 48 or 49.

4. Air Canada flight cancelled after sudden death on board

Emergency personnel met the flight, and the German 94-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) in Barbados. The flight originated from Montréal-Trudeau Int. (YUL). Loop extended deepest sympathy to his 84-year-old wife who was accompanying him on the flight.

5. Young woman found hanging from bedpost, dies

She was 23 years old. This death shook the Husbands Heights, St James community. Though rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), she was pronounced dead on arrival.
