Popular Discounts dismisses COVID-positive employee rumor

None of the staff at Popular Discounts (Popular) has tested positive for COVID-19.
In an official press release issued today, March 30, the management of Popular has made it emphatically clear that a rumour spreading across the island holds no truth.
The statement said:
“Popular, recognizing the impact that malicious rumours can have in an environment characterised by immense fear and anxiety in relation to COVID-19; made this position clear earlier today in response to a malicious voice message in circulation via social media.
"However, to reassure our staff, customers and the general public, Popular hereby categorically refutes in its entirety the said rumour and emphasizes that none of its employees has tested positive for COVID-19.
"Popular further states, that acting on the advice of the public health authorities and in accordance with standards agreed to and adopted by the majority of local supermarkets, Popular has instituted a number of measures to safeguard the health of its customers and employees, and to support the national effort to keep COVID-19 at bay.”
For anyone who has not visited any of the five or so locations of Popular recently, the release also shared the measures implemented to improve safety, which include:
- Sanitizing trolleys after each use.
- Sanitizing the hands of customers on entry to the store.
- Limiting the number of customers allowed to in the store at any time.
- Marking each cashier lane with trolley points, 6 feet apart to ensure social distancing.
- Installing glass screens between cashiers and customers at checkout, to further protect both staff and customers.
Staff policy amended
As it relates specifically to its employees, Popular has also enacted “a strict policy that requires any staff member who has come into contact with a COVID-19 patient or who has such a person living in their household, to go into self-quarantine for 14 days before being cleared to resume work.”
Popular stressed that it is committed to providing a clean, safe and satisfying shopping experience and wishes to thank our employees, customers and other stakeholders.
Just as the Health Minister reminds Barbadians repeatedly that this fight against COVID-19 will call for a national effort, Popular is asking “for the full cooperation of everyone involved in order to ensure the effectiveness of these measures.”
