Power cut leaves north of island in the dark

Barbados Light & Power Company customers, mainly in the north of the island, were without electricity for a few hours last night (May 31) due to outage at the St Thomas sub-station, the company has confirmed.

The outage occurred at approximately 10.50 pm and the restoration process, which began immediately, was completed at 1.30 this morning.

Transmission and Distribution crews have identified the cause of the fault and are in the process of completing repairs, the company has advised.

Director of Operations, Johann Greaves said that in an occurrence like this, even while the fault is being investigated, power supply could be restored. “Once the fault occurs, the system isolates that fault and electricity is restored to customers using alternative paths. This is critical for us since it limits the impact and reduces the duration of the outage.”

The fact that the system is designed in this way will be beneficial during the current 2020 Hurricane season, because it allows Light & Power to manage power supply and maintain reliability for customers who are depending on us, he added.
