Taylor creates history but Windies women slump to defeat again

West Indies women captain Stafanie Taylor created history with the bat on Wednesday, but England women overcame a middle-order wobble at Derby to claim a comfortable win in the second T20 and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Taylor batted well and made 28 runs after she bowled a great spell to take two for 12 off four overs. However, the visitors went down by 47 runs – identical margin as the first match at the Incaro County Ground in Derby on Monday night.

Taylor created history when she reached eight runs – to become the first West Indian woman to reach 3,000 runs in her T20 International career. She is just the second woman in history after Suzie Bates of New Zealand to reach the milestone.

West Indies looked well placed to chase down the target of 152 as Deandra Dottin – with another topscore of 38 – and Taylor put on 61 for the second wicket. However, West Indies slipped from 72 for one in the 12th over to end their 20 overs on 104 for eight on a cold night as outdoor temperatures dipped to as low as 11 degrees celsius.

Sarah Glenn was superb for England women with for two for 24 and Mandy Villiers, who did not bowl in the opening match, played a fine containing role to take two for 10 and prevent the Windies batters from freeing their arms.

Sophie Ecclestone worked her way through the tail to take two for 19.

Earlier, England - sent in bat - were in danger of squandering a strong start after slipping to 96 for six, but Glenn's aggressive 26 from 19 balls lifted them to 151 for eight from their allotted 20 overs.

Taylor again showed great control with her off-spin bowling as she was able to get turn and bounce from the surface. She was well backed up by seamer Shakera Selman, who continued to show great improvement, and ended with two for 32 to follow up her three for 24 in the first match.

The third match takes place on Saturday.
