Barbadians and visitors alike have been warned to expect lightning, thunder and "really heavy" rains for a few hours.

Acting Director of the Barbados Meteorological Services, Sabu Best brought a breaking news update on the Met Office's social media minutes ago saying:

"I have a very important weather update for you. Tropical wave has actually passed Barbados. It is to the West of Barbados. What's really significant is this really massive area of deep convection to our East, North-East, particularly North-East. This is actually approaching the island over the last few hours we were watching it and it seems to be ready to impact the island in the next hour or so, so commuters and residents, visitors and so please be on the look out for some really heavy showers within the next hour or so.

"We expect these showers to last for like a two-hour duration maximum."

He said that by 6pm it may be easing off or depleting.

Barbados was already under a Flash Flood warning from late this morning and that was expected to be discontinued at 6pm this evening.

Best said that the activity should "encroach on St Lucy, St Andrew, St Joseph first, before spreading across the entire island in the next hour or so. Just be on the look out for these really intense showers, lightning activity, thunderstorms as well. So be very careful out there on the roads."
